REAL SIMPLE
LIFE MADE EASIER

A trio of strong colors and white accents capture the eye.
THE INSPIRATION: Picturing a beach house
furnished with rich brown rattan and summery pink and green was the
starting point for Scott Sanders's upbeat room. "People tend to have fun
with color and take more chances with it in a beach house," says
Sanders. "It puts a smile on your face."
THE IDEAS: "I love traditional color combinations, and when I think
pink, I think green," says Sanders, referring to the pairing made famous
by Lilly Pulitzer (and infamous by The Official Preppy Handbook).
He began with a wall of neon lime green and used pinks in a variety of
solid and striped fabrics. To keep the vibrant shades in check, the
designer added liberal doses of white: two generous ginger-jar table
lamps, a mirror with a painted wooden frame, and a Parsons-style dining
table. DESIGNER TIPS AND TRICKS: The
seat cushions on the rattan chairs attach with Velcro, so they're held
securely yet can be removed (and cleaned) in an instant. To give a room
balance Sanders says, it's important to consider colors and materials,
but it's just as crucial to look at the mix of shapes. "If you have a
square, you have to have a round," he says. So he offset the boxy
space and angular furniture with curvy accessories, such as the mirror,
the lamps, the tableware, and ornamental moss balls. A little
customization goes a long way, adds Sanders, who employed a nifty
sleight of hand, switching out standard-issue white lame shades with
slightly more decorative brown ones. |
