ABITARE MIAMI May 2000
Miami News

House Bal Harbour
When
asked by Rubell to do a "contemporary" conversion of a 1950's
hotel that would create an informal, comfortable and relaxing
environment "that felt like a sprawling luxurious seaside
home", Scott Sanders (with Polo Ralph Lauren design team)--rejected
the traditional, over-formal lobby in favour of cosier public spaces
furnished with 18/19th century pieces and Japanese objects, adding a
general emporium, a bar something like a decadent art collector's inner
sanctum, and an ocean-view restaurant who's chef, Sheila Lukins, is also
a famous author of home cookery books. The 170 bedrooms and 10
suites are wood-paneled and exceptionally spacious, combining the home
comfort of Ralph Lauren furnishings with careful detailing (there are
vases to put collected sea shells in) and isolation-dispelling
communications technology (fax, internet and e-mail access, cordless
phone, play station, stereo system). To combine work and
pleasure the hotel offers a business centre and meeting rooms, but most
spectacularly, relaxation aids that include a large beach, an
ocean-inspired garden, a grove with hammocks, and an Olympic-size pool
surrounded by date palms.
