Pool Boy Cool
Scott Sanders,
who just completed Jeff Zucker’s house in Amaganset, designed the pool
space at the Hampton Designer Showhouse with knockout flair.
“I wanted to
play off the red brick and though, no one has ever used vibrant reds for
pool design. So that’s just what I did. The next day I found this
smashing red and white outdoor upholstery at the Donghia showroom. The
rest fell into place with lobster trays and napkins at Crate & Barrel
and my favorite – the blow-up lobsters floating in the water from
pooltoys.com.
“But I
thought, you know there’s still something missing – the pool boy! So I
had a casting call. We interviewed quite a few but they weren’t quite
right. So I set out for Cooper’s Beach right nearby and just started
walking. I bumped into a lifeguard and thought, he’s perfect. At first
Dean thought the whole concept was pretty out-there, so I told him it
was for a good cause, that the Showhouse benefited Southampton Hospital.
“Then Dean told
me, ‘My mom, Lorraine Vassallo, is administrative assistant to the VP of
external affairs at Southampton Hospital. She’s really involved in all
this. And I’m pre-med at Penn State. Sure I’ll help you out. It’s a
great cause.’”
“So we fitted
Dean out in a pool boy uniform that matched the color scheme and
everyone who came to the Showhouse thought it was a great touch. They
loved it.”
