THE
HAMPTON DESIGNER SHOWHOUSE
As the child of
a real estate developer, Scott Sanders spent a great deal of time
observing construction sites near his Ohio home. “I always had a
fascination with architecture and interiors,” he says. “By the time I
was twelve, my father allowed me to choose the finishes for all his
projects.” During his undergraduate years, he studied English
literature at Wittenberg University, and French in Geneva, Switzerland.
Sanders moved to
New York, and pursued a career in fashion as a buyer for Lord and
Taylor, and store manager for Polo-Ralph Lauren. After
graduating from Parsons in 1998, he worked at the Ralph Lauren flagship
store on Madison Avenue, and created their first interior design
department. Through a chance meeting with a client, the direction of
his life was altered.
In collaboration
with the Rubell family, owners of several Florida properties, Sanders
focused his talents on hospitality design. “They related to my style,
and commissioned me for The Beach House Bal Harbour, a boutique
hotel in Miami,” he says. The partnership with the Rubells continues to
flourish. Sanders is presently configuring the interiors for a 210-room
hotel near the Capitol in Washington, D.C., while simultaneously
creating a broad range of projects for his own successful, residential
design business.
For his
Showhouse debut, Sanders chose a crisp red and white palette with bold
yellow accents to showcase an American style spirit for the poolside
terrace. Upholstered teak furniture and red painted, vintage wrought
iron chairs provide comfortable seating areas in the outdoor
living/dining area. Terracotta pots overflowing with vibrant red and
yellow flowers add color and warmth to the landscape.
Matching
Frette beach towels have been thoughtfully placed inside the
awning-striped cabana. To display his playful, whimsical viewpoint,
Sanders floated two giant, inflatable lobsters in the center of the
pool. At one corner of the terrace, a statue of a lawn jockey dressed
in a red jacket and white pants carefully surveys the surroundings.
The outdoor
terrace is an enviable place to enjoy a bracing dip in the pool on a hot
summer day, lounge in solitude or share special moments with a select
group of friends. Whether in Florida or Southampton, seaside locales
provide Sanders with the ideal environment to showcase his youthful
vision, and fresh design perspective. |
