CONDE NAST TRAVELLER  May 2000 Beach House Bal Harbour  Miami Beach, USA  The location says it all.  Sandwiched between the luxury Bal Harbour shops (Gucci, Prada, etc.) and the ocean front, the Beach House is the ultimate weekend home: somewhere to shop and then drop.  Scott Sanders, chief designer for the Polo Ralph Lauren residential team, has renovated this 1950s resort with great attention to detail, even down to how the sofa cushions are ‘chopped’ (that’s plumped to you and me).  The design is more Hamptons hideaway than Miami Beach, although it only takes seven miles, 20 minutes, and $20 in a cab to be in the swing of things in South Beach.  Public spaces are large and subdivided to create a ‘homey’ atmosphere: it’s the sort of place where a girl can paint her toenails and a boy can trail sand in from the beach.  There are enormous sofas and signature Hurley chairs to sink into, a bar with live seahorses, a pool lined with lounge chairs and brightly coloured cabanas, a topiary garden, an indoor/outdoor restaurant, a private beach with hammocks slung between palm trees; and a decent-sized gym – all there for your indulgence.  Open only since October, it’s still a little fresh, but once it’s worn in, you’ll feel completely at home.
